The Theory Test

The driving theory test has two parts, part one is a multiple choice test of 50 questions and part two is a hazard perception test of 14 video clips in which you will have to identify 15 developing hazards. To prepare for both parts of the theory test we recommend that all candidates, regardless of driving experience, use the resource material available. For cars and motorcycles you'll be asked 50 questions in 57 minutes and the pass mark is 43 out of 50.
Visit  the online shop to view and purchase all the recommended study material to successfully pass the theory test and when you think you are ready follow this link to take a free online DSA theory test.

Hazard Perception Test

The hazard perception part is also delivered on a computer but you respond by clicking a button on the mouse. You'll be presented with a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes. In each clip there'll be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards.
To achieve a high score you'll need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five. You won't be able to review your answers to the hazard perception test; as on the road, you'll only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard. The pass mark for the car and motorcycle hazard perception part of the theory test is 44 out of 75.

Practical Driving Tests

The driving test is straightforward. It is designed to see if you can drive safely, know the Highway Code and can demonstrate this through your driving. Test routes are designed to be as uniform as possible and include a range of typical road and traffic conditions. You will be given directions by the Driving Examiner in good time and asked to carry out set exercises; there will be one reverse manoeuvre, of the four below:

  • Turn in the Road
  • Reverse around a corner
  • Reverse Parallel Park
  • Bay Reverse Park
  • and maybe an emergency stop.
From 4 October 2010, learner drivers will be tested on independent driving as part of the practical driving test.

During their test, candidates will have to drive for about 10 minutes, either following a series of directions, following traffic signs, or a combination of both.

To help candidates understand where they’re going, the examiner may show them a diagram.

It doesn't matter if candidates don't remember every direction, or if they go the wrong way - that can happen to the most experienced drivers.
